STEP III Prep

Forums:

Hello, I've been fortunate enough to be given a conditional offer to study maths at Cambridge. I was given the standard condition which requires a I in STEP III, however my school doesn't teach modules such as FP3, M3 and S3 etc.. Are there any additional key topics within those modules which I should definitely go over?

Many thanks!

Which board?

This depends a bit on which board you are taking. If for example you were taking MEI then I wouldn't worry about not doing FP3 as non of these topics appear in STEP.

Probably de Moivre's theorem, and make sure you are confident with all the calculus stuff, differential equations etc.

The STEP syllabus can be found here.

Edexcel

Thanks for the suggestions, luckily Edexcel has de Movire's theorem on its FP2, my main concern it's just sometimes on Step III seeing questions involving vectors, matrices and moments of inertia etc.. can be quite daunting. I've recently taught myself extra stuff such as hyperbolic functions, integration (reduction formulas, further trig substitution types) and conic sections. I'm also using Siklos booklets as well, I'm just not sure whether to learn more in order to maximize the varieties of questions to do or to tackle more difficult questions within my current syllabus (hopefully learning more tips and tricks during the process).

Specification

Matrices (and Groups) are no longer on the Specification for STEP, so don't both reading up on these (unless just for interest).

I would say concentrate on getting really good on the stuff you know. Look at some of the more recent papers for a better idea of typical content (if we can say STEP is ever typical).

Thank you

Thank you for the advice
